Lesson Plans
Each lesson plan needs to be tailor made to the age of the children and the size of the class.
For younger children (grade 1 to 5) this is the lesson plan I used successfully and is a good starting point for developing your own lesson plan and style.
Lesson Plan - Gr 1 - 5
* Greet - Hello, How are you?
* Ask them their names Eg: My name is ......... What is your name?
* Hello song - I found the following song to be great for the little ones, they love acting and it teaches them that there is more responses to "how are you" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWrkPXi6tLw (If you cannot view the Youtube video I have attached it to the bottom of this page)
* Introduce your lesson - Food, animals etc. Show them the flash cards. Go through once or twice. Walk around the class so that they all can see. If its food let them "taste"
* Hand out the flash cards - you will have many hand in the air and little voices shouting "let me try" :-)
* You can either call for the cards or as you hand out the cards ask the child what it is and they put it on the board. (make a fuss of the child if they get it right - clap, shout "yay" etc)
* You can do this max of twice after that they get bored
* As soon as you see their attention dwindling go into TPR. "Everyone stand up. Attention! Everyone walk. Everyone run, jump, swim etc."
* From there I go into singing songs about 2. These are the favourites in my classes. (I play the video)

* Everyone sit down
* Recap on the flash cards.
* Play a game if you have time. I usually stick to Tic Tac Toe as the kids love it and you can use the flash cards. I learned this from another ESL teacher that I had the pleasure of meeting (Thanks Mark) Draw a big Tic Tac Toe board and put the flash cards in the blanks. They have to say the word for the card before they get the space.
* Good Bye (You can sing the good bye song to the tune of Happy Birthday - most kids know it)
Approx class duration - 45 min.
I never needed to develop a lesson plan for gr 6 to gr 8. It was less structured as there was more content in the lessons. Basically I greeted them and asked they how they were. I encouraged them to tell me how they felt and not just say "I am fine thank you" They liked this and you get to know the kids better and get them talking. Then you go into the prepared lesson and before you know it the time is over and you're off to the next class.
